Если вы не живете в Неаполе на постоянной основе, или у вас нет друзей в пригороде, то вы, скорее всего, не в курсе о втором железнодорожном вокзале – Napoli Afragola. Построенное по проекту Захи Хадид и вошедшее в список BBC The Best Buildings of 2017, с воздуха здание выглядит как ползущая змея – это отсылка еще и к самым быстрым поездам Европы, которые своей обтекаемой формой тоже напоминают пресмыкающееся.
История у Афраголы весьма специфическая – проект был предложен в 2003 году, но стройку неоднократно прерывали. Стандартные неаполитанские проблемы: при раскопках наткнулись на остатки микенской деревни (ни одна новая станция метро здесь не обходится без того, чтобы кто-то не нашел новый античный форум или корабельные судна) и объект передали в руки археологов на какое-то время; в процессе пришлось адаптировать конструкцию здания из-за сейсмичности площади; позже деньги на постройку закончились. Считалось, что такой проект должен был способствовать развитию пригородной зоны и создать кучу рабочих мест, но идея постоянно провисала.
Я с каким-то благоговением отношусь к этой станции – как часто вам вообще доводится пройтись по абсолютно пустым гулким холлам, в которых виден почерк Хадид? Сидеть в огромных залах ожидания с прозрачной крышей, когда рядом с вами только 3 человека? Стоять на подсвеченных ночью ступеньках у входа, ожидая свою машину в густой тишине? Пустующие, месяцами никем не арендуемые магазины внутри, эскалаторы, вхолостую плетущиеся куда-то в небо, и изогнутые белые матовые коридоры – здесь действительно начинаешь верить в какой-то момент, что тебя просто высадили на одинокой космической станции. Сюда нельзя попасть автобусом или метро, дорога затеряна между чьих-то задних дворов и фермерских полей, на которых давно ничего не растет. В Афраголу можно добраться только по земле, право на загрязнение которой продали большим корпорациям и «технологически развитым» странам, не спросив ни у кого разрешения. Хадидовская громада, распластанная по горизонту, действительно напоминает какой-то космический корабль, сообщающий что будущее уже здесь. Можешь оглянуться вокруг и понять, какой ценой оно нам дается.
Администрация обещает, что к 2022 году будет налажено сообщение городского транспорта с вокзалом Napoli Afragola, чтобы им могли пользоваться и туристы. Близлежащая территория будет облагорожена, а подъезд к станции сделан более комфортным. Ходят слухи, что местным жителям хотят предложить более выгодные условия.
Говорят, Рим не за день строился. Видимо, и не за 20 лет.
If you are not Italian or you do not have any friends in the Neapolitan suburbs, then you most likely do not know about the second local railway station - Napoli Afragola. A Zaha Hadid project which was put included in the BBC Best Buildings of 2017 list is made in the shape of a crawling snake - a small reference to the fastest European trains that look the same in their futuristic streaming lines.
The history of Afragola is way particular – although the project was decided on back in 2003, the construction site was repeatedly interrupted and the main works finished only in 2017. Standard Neapolitan problems followed one by one: the workers stumbled upon the remnants of the Mycenaean village while digging the earth (happens every time you have to make a hole in the Southern soil) and the object was handed over to the archaeologists for a while. Then the project team understood that they have to adapt the structure of the building once again due to the seismicity of the area and after that the money for the construction ended. It was said on and on how Afragola Station was supposed to contribute to the development of a suburban area and to create a bunch of new jobs, but in the end the idea was constantly sagging like an old balloon.
The situation got worse by the fact that Afragola area is part of the territory of terra dei fuochi – or the land of fire as it is called in Naples. Several areas in the suburbs are crammed with landfills full of toxic waste - Northern Italian industrial companies and the countries of Northern Europe and Asia have dumped waste for decades here while paying for this to the mafia and simultaneously showing off to the media their national programs of an environmentally friendly waste disposal. Terra dei fuochi is a huge territory with buried raw materials and eternally burning landfills, an area whose inhabitants mostly consist of oncology patients. An area that loses harvests on their plots for years.
I have a kind of awe towards this station - how often do you generally walk through absolutely empty hollow halls, where you can feel the Hadid’s hand? Or sit in huge waiting rooms with a transparent roof above with only 3 people next to you? Stand on the illuminated at night by the entrance, waiting for your car in the thick silence? Hearing the echo in the emptiness with no shops rented inside for months or escalators, crawling into the emptiness of the sky - here you really begin to believe at some point that you were just dropped off at a lone space station. You can not get here by bus or subway, the road is lost between someone's backyards and farm fields where nothing has been growing for too long. Afragola can be reached only by land, which is allowed to be polluted only by large corporations and “technologically advanced” countries without asking anyone for permission. The Khadid’s giant is spread out over the horizon, resembling some kind of a spacecraft, indicating that the future is already here, it landed in this very place. You can look around and see what price we pay for it.
The local administration promises that regular public transportation will be arranged between Naples and the Afragola station by 2022, so that tourists can use it. The surrounding area will be improved, and the local parking lot will be even more organized. Rumor has it that the locals will be offered better accommodation conditions as well.
They say Rome was not built in a day. Neither was it built in 20 years, I guess.
